If you’re on the search for a new kayak, you’ve probably already learned that there are a LOT of options out there. The first step is choosing what style of kayak you want. If you’ve set your scopes on a sit-on-top kayak, we’ve got a great option for you – the Perception Sport Rambler 9.5.
We have reviewed many kayaks on this site. In an effort to help our readers as much as possible, we are always completely honest.
If a product we review isn’t a good product, we will tell you that! But honestly, this recreational sit-on-top kayak is a great choice for a variety of applications and personalities!
Great for Beginners
While this kayak is good for a lot of different kayaking styles, we think it’s best for beginners. It’s comfortable and stable design make it an easy craft to learn on. One reader commented that this kayak is “unbelievably stable”! We like that it’s stable but playful at the same time. It performs well on flat water and slower rivers, although it’s definitely not the right craft to take whitewater kayaking!
Backed by a Solid Reputation
Perception is a very well known and well reputed company in the kayaking community. They have been making solid, reliable, and well-made products for many years. This particular craft is backed by a 3 year manufacturers limited warranty, so you can buy with confidence!
Simple and Efficient
If you look at pictures of the Sport Rambler 9.5, you’ll notice that it looks remarkably simple. Well, that’s because it is! The design of this yak is extremely simple and straightforward, which we love. There are no extra hatches to lose or unnecessary devices to break. It’s just an efficient and stylish kayak that gets the job done!
While it’s far from the lightest sit on top kayak in it’s price range, the Rambler is still fairly light. It weighs in at about 45 lbs. While it may be difficult for many to carry by themselves, it’s quite easy to lift with a friend. There are convenient handles to help you carry it, as well.
There is a pretty sizable storage area beneath the seat that can store a surprising amount of gear. It might not be enough space for a full set of camping gear, but you’d be surprised at what you can fit in this kayak and still sit comfortably.
We always include reader and reviewer comments, whether positive or negative, in our reviews. One reviewer said that they didn’t feel like the backrest gave them the support they needed. Another said the craft felt rather heavy or bulky, and didn’t maneuver as well as they would have wished. A few people said that it was a bit heavier than necessary and was a pain to carry.
In the end, despite the few negative comments we received, we still recommend the Perception Sport Rambler. It’s a fun, simple, and very stable sit-on-top kayak, and compared to others, it’s priced reasonably.
Perception licenses their products to many companies for white label purposes, so don’t fret when you go to a store and end up with a west marine or another brand like L.L.Bean.
