KL Industries Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Fishing Kayak Review

I came across the KL Industries Sun Dolphin Journey SS Kayak while searching for an affordable and lightweight fishing boat for me and my wife. It had excellent ratings and feedback, plus the price was great, so I thought it was worth taking a chance on. I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

The Journey SS handles well, it’s light enough that I can carry it overland when I need to, and there’s plenty of storage space for a day on the water. I’ve had a great time fishing out of this little boat, and I think that anyone looking for a tandem kayak on a budget would love it too.

Superb Boating Specs

The kayak is about 10 ft in length, 30 inches wide, and it has a depth of about a foot. It works well even in shallow water, and it’s not a boat that you need to worry about getting hung up on the sand in. Apparently it’s made out of UV stabilized Fortiflex high density polyethylene, so it’s not about to fade or crack any time soon and it hasn’t faded a bit even after a ton of time out in the sun. The whole thing only weighs about 44 pounds, so it’s easy to transport on a roof rack or in the bed of a truck.

Test driving the KL

I was a little bit worried about carrying capacity fishing out of a kayak, but this boat holds at least 250lbs, so no worries there. If anything, a smaller boat with such a shallow draft is great for fishing in rivers and lakes since you can take it just about anywhere. If the capacity isn’t enough, there’s an option for tow-behind storage which I’m really interested in for longer trips.

I’ve had this boat everywhere, from sandy shallows and rocky rivers all the way out to the open water of a lake and I’ve always been really impressed with the stability. Even when you’re reeling in a big fish the Journey stays stable and doesn’t rock like a canoe would, this is why finding the best angler kayak takes time. It’s probably because you’re sitting so low in the boat, but whatever it is I’m a huge fan of this boat.

Amazing Kayaking Features

This tandem kayak has a ton of little features and extras that really caught my eye. The first thing I noticed were the three rod holder, two of which are stationary and one on a swivel, so you can fish off of either side of the front of the boat. Paddles were also included which was awfully nice, since it makes me feel like there weren’t any hidden costs. There are too many other features for me to go into detail with all of them, but the biggest standouts were:KL Industries Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Kayak angle view in drab green

  • A portable accessory carrier for tow-behind storage
  • Protective and comfortable thigh pads in the seats
  • Dry storage and shock cord rigging
  • Adjustable foot braces
  • Retractable carrying handles
  • Really sturdy paddle holders

With so many options, it is no wonder many kayakers use it for recreational use as well.

Solid Warranty From A Solid Canoe Maker

Finally, the KL Industries Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS kayak comes with a great warranty and service (just check out their FAQ for great advice without even the need to give them a call). That was really important to my purchase, since a lot of times you can tell the quality of a product by how willing the manufacturer is to stand behind it. It also comes with a 5-year manufacturer warranty on the parts and rigging along with a 2-year warranty on the hull.

Lastly, the boating & marine accessories available from this company are one of leading ones in selection, but if you want more specialized accessories check out our list here.
