Whether you’re an experienced kayaker or you’re just getting started, it’s a great idea to get your kids interested in kayaking! It’s a great way to bond with your children, plus it’s great exercise.
The only downside is that most of the time any kayak that fits you will be too big for your children, so you’ll likely have to buy a kayak specifically for your kid.
Don’t worry, we’ve already found an affordable and well-made product for you – the Pelican Solo kayak!
Built for Kids
This Pelican kayak is specifically designed for children and it is the best kayak for kids that we have reviewed. Now, to be completely accurate, it’s designed for anyone under 5’ and 140lbs, but it’s great for children. Kids as young as 4 can easily pilot this kayak quite easily! It’s a sit-on-top style, and it is bright yellow and includes a safety flag to improve visibility. It also has a swim-up rear deck that makes it easy for kids to climb up onto the kayak from the water. Lastly, it has an adjustable backrest so that it can adapt as your child grows.
Because kids generally won’t have the best balance, and because this will likely be your child’s first kayak, it’s important to choose a boat that is stable and easy to maneuver. Thankfully, the Pelican Solo is ultra stable. The shallow twin arched hull was specifically designed for stability, and it really shows.
Backed by Reputation
Pelican is one of those companies that we always recommend because they consistently make quality products. They have been a big player in the kayak industry for a long time, and they have developed quite the loyal following of customers. They use design quality products, employ good manufacturing processes, and they stand by their products.
Easy to Transport
The Pelican Solo is just 6 feet long, and weighs in at just over 20 pounds. It’s easy to pick up and carry even with only 1 person. It even has handles on the side to make it easier to carry. Best of all, if you have a van, SUV, or station wagon, you can likely fit this right in the back of your vehicle, eliminating the need for a roof rack!
We always include reader comments, both negative and positive, in our reviews. While most comments on this product were positive, we found that a few people complained about the paddle that is included with this kayak. Apparently some found the paddle to be a little bit flimsy and breakable, and a few ended up buying a replacement paddle. While this is unfortunate, considering the price of this kayak we think it’s still a great product and a bargain price when compared to other beginner kayaks.
To conclude, we wholeheartedly recommend the Pelican Solo kayak. It’s super stable, and kid-friendly in every way. It’s manufactured by Pelican International, so you can trust that it’s well made and that it will last for years to come. We also like that it’s affordable, and that it’s easy to transport!
